2018

Made   up   of   16   middle-   and   high-school   aged students,  this  year’s  home  school  team  has  been tasked   to   build   a   machine   that   will   aid   in collecting   trash   from   our   oceans,   namely   the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.  The  team  has  spent  time  learning  about  plastics in  the  ocean  and  the  impact  that  plastics  have on  our  environment  and  ecosystem.   They  have learned   about   the   many   ways   that   trash   and plastic  ends  up  in  our  oceans,  including  through watershed   runoff,   littering,   and   fishing   gear being   lost   or   abandoned.    They   have   learned about   the   recycling   efforts   happening   in   our area   and   around   the   world,   how   plastics   are made,  and  about  how  long  it  takes  for  certain kinds of trash to decompose in the landfill.  Using    only    the    materials    supplied    by    BEST Robotics,  all  teams  will  have  exactly  six  weeks  to design,    engineer,    build,    and    test    their    best machine      idea.       Working      alongside      the engineering  team  is  the  marketing  team,  busy designing  merchandise,  the  company’s  logo  and website,   and   documenting   the   start-to-finish process of building the team’s machine.  The website created for the 2018 competition can be found by going to    2018nwflrobotspot.weebly.com
